A Designer’s Guide: Optimizing Machine Layouts with Hollow Shaft RV/NRV Reducers
For mechanical engineers and machine designers in the packaging and filling equipment sectors, space is often the most valuable commodity. As machines become more complex, the room available for drive systems shrinks. Traditional gearboxes with solid output shafts require bulky couplings and external bearings. The ABA RV/NRV Series with its hollow shaft design offers a streamlined alternative that simplifies machine architecture.

The Logic of Direct Mounting
The primary advantage of a hollow shaft worm gear is that it can be mounted directly onto the machine’s driven shaft. This "plugin" style of motor-reducer integration eliminates several components:
Couplings: No need for expensive flexible or rigid couplings.
Mounting Brackets: The gearbox often becomes "shaft-mounted," held in place by a simple torque arm.
Alignment Issues: Because the reducer is mounted directly on the driven shaft, the risk of shaft misalignment—a primary cause of premature bearing failure—is virtually eliminated.
Versatility in Small Spaces
The ABA RV/NRV series (from 030 up to 150) is designed for "universal mounting." This means the unit can be oriented in any direction without affecting lubrication efficiency. For a designer, this means the three-phase asynchronous motor can be tucked under a conveyor bed rather than sticking out into the aisle. By selecting the right size—such as the popular RV/NRV 050 or 063—designers can achieve high torque in a footprint that is 30% smaller than traditional helical gearboxes.
